Earth Defense Force 5 is the fifth mainline entry to the Earth Defense Force series, but eighth overall including spinoffs. The series has a cult following, thanks to its often over-the-top and unintentionally hilarious depiction of an alien invasion. Earth Defense Force 5, like its predecessors, follows the exploits and campaigns of the Earth Defense Force, a global military organization tasked with defending the planet against extraterrestrial threats. These threats are usually depicted as gigantic insects and other animals, often resembling something similar on Earth.
Earth Defense Force 5 allows players to take control of several types of units, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. These units are armed with many kinds of weapons and gadgets, and with their own perks and skills as well. The gameplay plays out across a campaign of missions; Earth Defense Force 5 is notable during its release for featuring the highest number of missions of any EDF game to date at 110, excluding special DLC missions.
Besides the overgrown insects and wacky unit archetypes, Earth Defense Force 5 is best known for its glorious English voice acting and the characters' random outbursts of “EDF! EDF!” chanting at random points in the game. Earth Defense Force 6, set to be released later this month, will continue the storyline established in Earth Defense Force 2017 (the third game in the series) and Earth Defense Force 2025 (the fourth).
