A new Elite Dangerous trailer heralds a major escalation of mankind’s latest war with the Thargoids. And if the alien invaders’ treatment of the recently relocated Oracle spaceport is any indication, it looks like humanity will be fighting off its back foot for the foreseeable future.
Elite players have tangled with the Thargoids for months now. The invaders first made their presence felt with mysterious interdictions and occasional sightings on the surface of planets in and around the Pleiades Nebula. Early encounters were mostly peaceful. Elite fans were usually pretty nervous when it happened: the Thargoids would typically disable your ship’s systems before scanning the vessel and warping away, leaving you entirely at their mercy for an uncomfortable amount of time. It took a few months for the situation to turn violent, and an early breakthrough in anti-alien weaponry didn’t give Elite pilots the upper hand for very long.
The community gradually learned how to fight the Thargoids together, even defeating more powerful iterations that arrived in the weeks after The Return, Elite Dangerous’ fourth expansion. But now the aliens are stepping up their offensive, and the latest trailer doesn’t bode well for the science-focused starport that recently relocated to Pleiades to study the resurgent Thargoids. Or any other installation standing between the Thargoids and their objective… whatever it may be. Outright destruction still doesn’t seem to be their primary goal. But mankind could be fighting an entirely unwinnable battle if the Thargoids can disable and devastate whole starports before anyone has time to respond.
