The extended Flash Season 4 trailer is here and it gives us at least a little bit of an idea about how Barry comes back from the speed force.
Iris hasn’t worked up the courage to sleep in the bed she shared with Barry since he disappeared, so she’s been posting up on the couch. Joe is convinced Barry is dead, and even suggests a funeral. “What are we going to bury, Dad? The empty suit in the lab?,” Iris asked.
Meanwhile, Vibe and Kid Flash are barely keeping Central City safe. Cisco is adamant they need to bring Barry back, but Iris is not having it. “Barry told us to keep moving forward, not to save him!” she screams at Cisco. “How are you even certain he is still alive?”
It’s unclear if Cisco goes behind Iris’ back or they decide together, but he whips out some huge cosmic-gun device (maybe an upgraded speed bazuka?) and glowing red ball. “Barry is trying to send us a message I know it,” Cisco says when speed force energy appears to disrupt Central City’s gravitational pull.
Once Cisco puts this new device into action, we see is Barry’s glowing-red legs land in the middle of a country road, right where the teaser trailer released last week began. The stakes get bigger when Samuroid comes to town and asks for The Flash. Cisco tells a bearded-Barry he made him a new suit, but this new Barry seems completely uninterested. That’s when red streaks cross Barry’s eyes. When the trailer ends, he has a longer haircut with no beard, suggesting he’s definitely not the same person we know and love.
The details of Cisco’s technology that brings Barry back is unclear. If you recognize this glowing red ball of energy, let us know in the comments. What’s also a mystery is why doesn’t Iris want to save Barry? To be fair, he did say don’t save me no matter what when he voluntarily entered the speed force against everyone's wishes. The fact Cisco, who was negatively affected by Barry’s decision to go back in time and save his mother in Flashpoint last season, wants to save Barry and his fiance doesn’t is very telling. Iris must really love and respect Barry if she’s willing to let him die. Candace Patton, who played Iris, teased this antagonistic relationship between Iris and Cisco at Heroes and Villains Fan Fest last weekend.
“Iris takes on this leadership role at STAR Labs because Barry is gone, and Iris and Cisco have very different ideas about whether to bring Barry out of the speed force and they kind of butt heads on what the right decision to make is,” Patton said at Heroes and Villains. “Iris, being the new leader, thinks her way is the right way and Cisco, having been at STAR Labs since its conception, has his thoughts on the subject.”
Iris doesn’t appear to be in the same scene where Cisco uses his tech to penetrate the speed force. Do you think Cisco goes behind Iris’ back to save Barry?
The Flash Season 4 premieres Oct. 10.
