Futurama is being revived, but not in the way you might expect. The series that was canceled back in 2013 never got to Season 8, but new content will soon arrive in the form of the Futurama: Worlds Of Tomorrow game for Android and iOS. Fox announced the collaboration with TinyCo Wednesday morning.
While a mobile game is obviously no substitute for a new batch of episodes, the Futurama band is getting back together to ensure that Worlds Of Tomorrow captures the essence of the source material. Executive Producers Matt Groening and David X. Cohen are supervising the project to make sure the transition is done right.
“I love this game because it feels just like Futurama," said Groening. “Except now you get to jab the characters in the face.” Cohen added that the project features “new stories from the original writers, cast and animators.”
In terms of gameplay, that’s all we officially know. However, the fact that it's being helmed by TinyCo might offer some details as well. The popular mobile studio previously partnered with Fox to release Family Guy: The Quest for Stuff in 2014. Its basic premise involved standard city building elements with microtransactions and timed construction. In general, it had several similarities to 2012’s The Simpsons: Tapped Out. Faithful writing and character appearances made both games true to the original shows.
Could we be looking at a Futurama version of that concept set in New New York? That seems like a possibility. Just look at that city skyline in the teaser image above. The emphasis on buildings is subtle, but it may be a hint.
While even more remote, it’s also possible that the success of a product like this is a way for Fox to gauge modern interest in the series. Are the waters being tested for a more complete comeback? We’re doubtful, but one can only hope.
Futurama: Worlds Of Tomorrow has no known release date, but players can sign up for notifications of its release on Google Play and the game’s official website.
