Yesterday, The Game Awards 2021 finally took place. The event distributed awards for more than 30 categories. However, we all know the most important one is the Game of the Year award. So, who won this year?
Game of the Year Award Winner
It Takes Two, the co-op action-adventure game, grabbed the crown this year. It defeated several other behemoth titles like Metroid Dread, Resident Evil Village, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Psychonauts 2, and Deathloop.
That’s not all though, The GOTY winner took home two more awards, namely, Best Family Game and Best Multiplayer Game. It was nominated for six awards and won half of them. That’s not bad by any means.
Other Multiple Award Winners
Deathloop, on the other hand, was nominated for nine awards but won only two. It won Best Art Direction and Best Game Direction. Forza Horizon 5 was nominated for four awards and took home three of them. Final Fantasy XIV and Kena: Bridge of Spirits won two awards each as well.
No single game dominated the event this year, unlike last time. In 2020, The Last of Us Part 2 was nominated for 11 awards and won seven of them including GOTY. It still has the highest number of wins in the show’s history. Who knows, maybe that record will be broken next year by God of War Ragnarok.
Player’s Choice Award and Most Anticipated Game
This year's Player's Choice Award, which is voted exclusively by players, was won by none other than Halo Infinite. The title defeated Forza Horizon 5, Metroid Dread, Resident Evil Village, and GOTY winner It Takes Two.
Halo Infinite was not nominated for any other award due to its release date. The game will be eligible for nomination next year.
Elden Ring is the most anticipated game for the second time in a row. It defeated other major titles like God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel, and Starfield.
