Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 is getting the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) controllers. This has led to speculations that more classic Nintendo controllers may be on the way for the Switch 2.
More Classic Nintendo Controllers Could Come for Switch 2
A new rumor shared by Nash Weedle via X has claimed that Nintendo is ensuring the compatibility of more classic Nintendo controllers of its past-gen consoles for the Switch 2.
There are plenty of consoles that Nintendo made available for the original Switch to deliver a blast from its past, all focused on the 8-bit and 16-bit experiences.
While users may play these titles using the Switch's controls via the Joy-Cons, Nintendo has introduced a more immersive and better way to experience these via a dedicated controller. For the Nintendo Switch Online's offers, each console platform has its dedicated controller, including the likes of the N64 controller, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) controller, the NES controller, and the SEGA Mega Drive control pad.
According to the rumor, these classic controllers may soon offer compatibility with the Nintendo Switch 2 in the future, particularly as they are available to connect to the original Switch consoles wirelessly.
NES Controller For Switch 2 Might Only the First
It was revealed by the leaker that the only challenge for now is the classic NES controllers that Nintendo released for the original Switch as they charge similarly to the original Joy-Cons of the console. This means that the old NES controllers, which use the slide mechanism of the Joy-Cons, will not be compatible with the Switch 2 as due to the magnetically attaching technology.
Moreover, the old NES controller for the Switch does not also have a dedicated USB port to charge it wired via USB-C, and while it was revealed to also be compatible to the new console, users will need to have external ways to juice up its batteries.
If the old controllers get low battery notice, users would be required to have the past-gen Joy-Con charging stand or third-party options to replenish its power cells.
That being said, the leak claims that Nintendo will make a revamped version of the NES controller for the Switch 2 that will ensure compatibility, but the company will reportedly no longer make it exclusive to docked charging.
This next-gen NES controller, will reportedly feature a USB-C charging port so users may charge it directly to wires and no longer rely on docking it to charging stations or the console itself.
