The return of the famed British archaeologist and adventurer, Lara Croft, has excited the public as "Tomb Raider" was announced to get a new television series adaptation, but that has now been reportedly canceled by Amazon.

Initially, Amazon picked up on the "Tomb Raider" franchise's live-action series adaptation last year following its success with "Fallout" and already selected the crew and its main star.

It was revealed that Sophie Turner from the modern "X-Men" franchise and "Game of Thrones" was to lead the series and give life to Lara Croft, but all of those are already down the drain based on new reports.

Amazon Cancels 'Tomb Raider' Adaptation—But Why?

A new report from The Daily Mail (via ComicBook Gaming) explains the latest developments over at Amazon Studios, particularly for their planned live-action series adaptation of the "Tomb Raider" franchise.

Instead of good news, the latest report claims that Amazon had already canceled the series internally because of different factors affecting its development.

According to the report, a source has claimed that the "Tomb Raider" project over at Amazon is already "dead." Much remains unknown behind the development of the Amazon Studios adaptation apart from Sophie Turner being named Lara Croft, the game's main protagonist, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge leading its development and script.

One of the reasons divulged by the source behind the cancelation of the "Tomb Raider" series development is that Turner cannot commit to the role because of her busy schedule throughout the year.

It was also revealed that Jennifer Salke, who previously green-lit the project for its development, is no longer working at Amazon Studios in her role.

Sophie Turner Could Have Been the Modern Lara Croft

Recently, Netflix released a "Tomb Raider" series adaptation but in an animated style, which performed well and even led to rumors of a new game for the franchise.

However, fans got even more excited when it was announced by Amazon that a live action series was also in the works with Turner taking on the lead role.

Before Turner, other actresses had taken on the role of Lara Croft in movie adaptations.

First, there is the iconic depiction of Angelina Jolie in her early 2000s portrayal of the character, which set the tone for female-led action movies of the era. Next up was the Alicia Vikander-led "Tomb Raider" from 2018, which focused on a grittier take on the character.
