The game was first revealed through a cinematic trailer during The Game Awards held last December. It made a lot of Dune fans really excited since it's been two decades since the last Dune game came out. Dune: Spice Wars is a real-time strategy game that has 4X elements with players leading their factions battling for control and dominance over the desert planet of Arrakis. The goal is to control the spice, the most valuable resource in the universe.
There are different ways for players to control the spice, like subterfuge and the use of secretive agents to sabotage the plans of opponents. Those who want to test their political savviness can go for political influence and vote on resolutions in the Landsraad to move their plans further. There’s also economic supremacy and for those who want blood, open warfare.
It's worth noting that the release of Denis Villeneuve’s epic film version in October 2021 helped introduce the franchise to mainstream fans.
Dune: Spice Wars is coming to Early Access on Steam sometime this spring. Before the full release, there will be updates coming out to introduce features like multiplayer and more factions. For now, the houses available are Atreides and Harkonnen. Two more are to be revealed at a later date. So far, the PC system requirements are yet to be revealed. Still, with the game being touted as 4x in real-time, players should know what to expect.
In a statement, Shiro Games CEO Sebastien Vidal revealed that Dune is a universe that they care deeply about and know that there are also millions of fans that have that same strong connection. He added that the game is one made by fans, for fans.
