Dune is one of those titles difficult to translate from books to other media like movies. One format that has been doing well though is that of video games. So, it's not surprising that a new game under development is based on the novel. Dune: Spice Wars is a real-time strategy game with 4X elements is coming to Early Access on PC next year.
The game is being developed by Shiro Games, the same studio that released RTS Northgard in 2017. This upcoming game was featured during the recent The Game Awards. You can watch the trailer below:
Fans of the novel or movies will love the game since they get the chance to play many of the iconic characters in the likes of Duke Leto Atreides and Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. They may even meet the massive sandworms. Much like the source material, the game has players trying to take over Arrakis. They can choose between using subterfuge, economic supremacy, political influence, or even warfare.
The game has several playable factions, each one having its own strengths and weaknesses. While the goal is to control the spice, there are different ways to meet the objective. These are just some of the many features offered in the game.
Shiro Games CEO Sebastien Vidal revealed in a post that they are more than happy to use their expertise in coming up with strategy games, particularly that of the Dune universe. He added that everyone at the studio is a fan of Dune, not only of the original novel but even the latest film with Denis Villeneuve at the helm.
Vidal went on to say that the Dune universe is a good setting in strategy games, considering that the two major factions are rivals for centuries.
By the way, in the FAQ section, the studio revealed that the reason why they’re releasing an Early Access version is to get feedback from the community. This can let them expand and improve the game. Learn more about the game here.
