Recycling helps the environment but in the case of Apple, it’s also turning in some revenue. The company, which uses robots to repurpose parts from used iPhones, released their annual environmental report on Thursday, which reveals that the company recovered 61 million pounds of glass, steel, aluminum and other materials.
Of the 61 million pounds of recovered materials, Apple retrieved 2,204 pounds of gold. Business Insider points out that with the current rate for gold ($1,229.90 per troy ounce), Apple has made nearly $40 million in gold alone.
How did Apple repurpose so much gold? Fairphone cites that the average smartphone is made with 30 milligrams of gold and estimates suggest that Apple Watches have more than 50 grams of 18-karat gold in them.
