Season 2 of ABC’s drama How to Get Away With Murder had a lot of twists and turns for Frank (Charlie Weber). His character is the right-hand man for Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) and by the end of the season, he has been shunned by Keating for his involvement in the Mahoney case ten years ago.
Flashbacks throughout the season revealed that Frank was not always the confident man he is today and he took a bribe from Annalise’s client to bug her room, which resulted in her miscarriage. Knowledge of this is what Sam (Tom Verica) held over Frank when he asked Frank to kill Lila.
On a personal front, Frank and Laurel (Karla Souza) took steps towards a healthy relationship, only for Laurel to learn that Frank killed Lila. “He definitely let his guard down — which is out of character for him,” said Weber to TVLine. “And yeah, there could be a lesson learned there for Frank. But when telling someone “I love you” comes out as “I killed Lila,” you have to wonder if that person is capable of real love or what their idea of love is. That was a real rollercoaster for him, and he’s a little worse for the wear on the other side of it.”
Laurel went looking for Frank in the end of the episode, suggesting that she still cares about him. But Season 2 frames lots of questions for her, as she realized how similar Frank is to her father and ended up kissing Wes (Alfred Enoch).
Frank is seen missing in the Season 2 finale, but Weber disclosed to TVLine that he is a series regular for Season 3, as far as he knows. Frank’s relationship with Annalise is likely to change in the third season as forgiveness is on the table. “It’ll be really interesting to see what happens in Season 3, to see how the show adapts and changes shape because of the realignment of certain relationships,” said Weber to TVLine. “But you know, it’s not about Frank getting back on the team and going to court. He doesn’t give a s–t about that. He just wants things to be OK with Annalise.”
Creator Peter Nowalk told TV Guide: “He had a decision to make. Either he tries to do something to win her love back or he takes the money and takes off. Those are things we'll get into next season. To me, yes, we solved the big mystery between Frank and Sam, what their secret was, but I think a lot has gone on that we have yet to see. There's 10 years between that hospital scene and him killing Lila, so clearly a lot has happened, as well as, how did Sam and Frank first meet? These are all stories that I'm excited to show you guys when it's right.”
How to Get Away with Murder returns in the fall.
