Battery problems have been longstanding issues for various iPhones. The iPhone 6s in particular has suffered from battery drain issues for some time, to the point where Apple instated a battery replacement program. However, new reports indicate there are more software issues causing Apple’s smartphones to malfunction across the board.

Apple devices are currently running iOS 10.1.1 and the OS version reportedly contains bugs that are causing iPhones handsets to lose over 50 percent of their battery power quickly when sitting idle. The issue appears to affect several iPhone models, primarily between the iPhone 5 and iPhone 7, in addition to the issues already seen on the iPhone 6s.

Users of iPhones handsets have taken to Apple’s support forums to complain about rapid battery drain and instances of smartphones shutting down completely while still having 20 to 30 percent battery life remaining.

Battery issues with Apple’s iPhone fleet have become so widespread that the government watchdog group, China Consumers Association, has begun to investigate potential causes, according to Quartz. The group’s findings indicate iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus all contain the malfunction that causes them to shut down spontaneously. The issue is particularly found in iPhone 6s models produced between September and October 2015.

At this time there is no indication whether the core issue is a hardware problem or something with software. Reports indicate even some handsets that have received battery replacements are still suffering from sudden shut downs. While the issue appears to have expanded to handsets outside of the iPhone 6 and 6s models as of the iOS 10.1.1 update.

Apple has not yet commented on the most recent iPhone battery drain issues; however, even former Apple employees have commented on experiencing battery drain and shut down on personal devices.

At the moment some iPhone users have chosen to update to the current iOS 10.2 beta software to attempt to alleviate the battery drain issues. The official iOS 10.2 software is expected to hit iPhones and other compatible Apple devices in December.
