Sony has formally published a comprehensive teardown of the PlayStation 5 Pro, unveiling the internal hardware upgrades, most significantly, its sophisticated cooling system.
With the release of this upgraded console, the firm has alleviated past issues regarding the utilization of liquid metal cooling, incorporating new design elements that are designed to provide more stable thermal performance.
Enhanced Liquid Metal Cooling for Improved Heat Management
One of the most impressive design changes to the PS5 Pro is how its liquid metal cooling system has been improved. Although previous iterations of the PlayStation 5 employed liquid metal to cool the APU (Accelerated Processing Unit), Sony has now introduced fine grooves where the liquid metal is placed. This feature, as Shinya Tsuchida, PS5 Pro Mechanical Design Lead, explains, allows for more stable cooling over a longer period.
Tsuchida underscored that the team had been expecting semiconductor improvements throughout the initial PS5 development, so liquid metal was used right from the start. That vision has paid off with the PS5 Pro, where the denser chips need to be cooled more effectively.
Dealing with Liquid Metal Leakage Rumors
According to The Verge, the redesign follows hot on the heels of rampant online speculation regarding liquid metal leakage within the initial PS5.
A few repair centers and YouTube personalities alleged the material leaked and could harm the system, particularly when the console was held upright, but these were subsequently believed as overstatements or misquotes.
Wololo.net, one of the websites that originally propagated the rumor, released a retraction, citing that their report was a "critical misunderstanding."
Despite the controversy, Sony has gone out of its way in the PS5 Pro to make it more reliable and hardware longevity-friendly, giving users an extra layer of assurance.
Improved Cooling Fan and Thermal Management
In addition to the liquid metal re-engineering, the PS5 Pro has a larger fan with re-engineered blades. The blades now have smaller fins in between them, which maximize airflow and minimize noise while achieving high performance.
Sony says a Pro model contains more thermal management parts than electronic parts, underpinning its focus on keeping the system cool for heavy workloads.
This upgrade is in line with discoveries from iFixit's teardown, which earlier showed that thermal solutions occupy a large amount of space inside the console.
For users who are stressing the PS5 Pro's hardware to the limit, either through 4K gaming or heavy processing, this translates to improved overall temperature management and system longevity.
