Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV are both helmed by Square Enix director Tetsuya Nomura, and Japanese gamers really want to see both projects collide in the future. In a Famitsu survey via KHInsider, Noctis came out on top as the most-desired Final Fantasy cameo.
The survey was conducted for the Japanese magazine’s Kingdom Hearts fifteenth anniversary blowout. One of the poll’s 15 questions asked responders “which Final Fantasy character would you like to appear in the series.” Here’s how the votes broke down.
- Noctis [Final Fantasy XV]
- Lightning [Final Fantasy XIII]
- Zidane [Final Fantasy IX]
- Chocobo
- Bartz [Final Fantasy V]
The poll accounted for more than 500 votes, and Noctis emerged victorious by a margin of 36.
What this tells us is that, in Japan at least, the world created in Final Fantasy XV has managed to capture the hearts and minds of gamers unlike most recent iterations of the series. Its sales figures would seem to back that up as well. As of January, more than 6 million copies had been sold worldwide.
As those who have played Kingdom Hearts will know, Final Fantasy cameos are par for the course when it comes to this popular series. Over 10 games, there have been appearances from Cloud, Sephiroth, Yuffie, Aerith, Cid and more. That’s quite a lot from Final Fantasy VII, of course. The fact that we’re seeing Noctis demanded alongside such iconic names is great news for the latest installment.
The question then becomes how someone like Noctis might contribute to Sora’s story. Without getting too deep into plot spoilers, we know Noctis definitely struggles with some strong inner demons brought about by his royal heritage. Depending on timelines, might Sora be able to help the prince accept his noble destiny? That’d be a pretty neat thread to consider.
Those who are curious about the other responses should check out the source link above. Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix was voted as the series’ best game, with Sora and Aqua taking top honors as best male and female characters. Oathkeeper was voted best Keyblade and Twilight Town was named best world.
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 HD is available now on PS4. Kingdom Hearts 3 remains in development for PS4 and Xbox One.
