Every Krypton trailer so far has pushed the same story: Seg-El needs to protect Superman’s legacy. However, the latest trailer suggests the story is more complicated by introducing Adam Strange. Played by Shaun Sipos, Strange travels back in time from Detroit because someone else traveled back in time to prevent Superman from being born. The trailer is the biggest, most confident thing we’ve seen from Krypton yet, and the perfect balance between the science fiction and comic book genres.
Thanks to reporting from Natalie Abrams of Entertainment Weekly, we know the series is directly concerned with what happened before Krypton exploded, a story that’s largely been untold.
“History could be changed, and what happens in this show could be very different from the backstory that people know,” Executive Producer David S. Goyer said at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour Tuesday. “A lot of people know that Krypton blows up and that’s what caused Superman to come to Earth, but this is really an untold story.”
DC CCO Geoff Johns explained the time travel embedded at the series core will give the writers creative license to keep unpredictability high. Adam Strange jumpstarting the story to save the Superman legacy is also quite ironic.
“He’s an unlikely hero,” Johns said of Adam Strange. “He’s the unlikely choice of shouldering this burden of trying to stop someone from the present trying to prevent this Superman legacy… Adam Strange is a character that doesn’t really embody what Superman does as far as honor and justice, doesn’t really know right from wrong, but looks up to Superman.”
The series will premiere on SYFY March 21. Goyer believes Krypton will be the gateway into the “DC science fiction universe.”
“We’re also factoring the Phantom Zone figures into the show, which means we can delve into other times and other planets eventually, even the inclusion of Adam Strange, that should tip you off that it’s not going to just be set on Krypton.”
