The Last of Us IP is often considered synonymous with quality, and for good reasons. Both games in the series were incredible, the HBO show is considered one of the best video game adaptations, and the remake of the first game looked and performed spectacularly on PS5.
Many players thought that the PC version will also have the same level of quality, which fans expect from a Naughty Dog game; unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. The PC port, released on March 28, has been an overall disappointment for many. As of writing, the game only has a 45% positive rating on Steam.
The Issues
The PC port suffers from a plethora of technical issues, most of which revolve around the game’s performance, although some players encountered weird visual bugs as well, including characters getting wet for no reason.
TLOU Part 1 on PC isn’t exactly a hardware-friendly game. It’s extremely demanding on the CPU and also requires a large amount of VRAM even in 1080p. The game also suffers from stuttering issues caused by background loading. Combine them with long loading and shader compilation times, you definitely won’t have a good experience.
We experienced most of these issues ourselves, along with an unfortunate oversight for arrow key players. You can visit our previous story for more details about the bug and its workaround.
Upcoming Fixes
Thankfully, these problems won’t be present for long since Naughty Dog already released two hotfixes that addressed some of them. Two more patches are on the way as well, with a smaller patch going live in a couple of hours and a bigger one planned for April 7.
A developer fixing their game is always appreciated but this shouldn’t be a norm. Gamers don’t like the “pay today and play tomorrow” mentality. Players who eagerly wait for Sony games on PC will understandably be wary about future ports.
