The Last of Us Part 2’s latest trailer was just released today during Sony’s Paris Games Week presentation, and it raises more questions than it answers. The trailer also introduces us to some new cast members, including Uncharted 4’s Laura Bailey (the voice of Nadine Ross).
First up, watch the new trailer below. Warning: This is graphic and brutal, but what do you expect from The Last of Us ?
Probably everyone’s first question is: Where are Ellie and Joel? The two protagonists from the first game are nowhere to be seen in the trailer. Also, who are these new people we haven’t met yet? We don’t have the answer to the first question, but we do know who the new faces are, thanks to the Naughty Dog Twitter account.
Victoria Grace will play Yara, The OA’s Ian Alexander portrays Lev, Supernatural’s Emily Swallow steps into the role of a character also named Emily and Bailey’s a character whose name has been censored in the announcement tweet. In the trailer, Bailey’s character is the one getting hung. Swallow’s Emily seems like she’ll be the antagonist, as she’s acting particularly evil in the trailer.
Now that we have the voices behind the new faces, how will they be involved in the overall story? This is where the speculation begins. One theory is that this scene is a flashback showing Ellie’s mom (the unnamed character played by Bailey). This could make sense, seeing as how Emily puts a knife to the woman’s gut. If Ellie has an immunity to the disease in The Last of Us, it makes sense her mom would have the immunity as well.
Alternatively, this could be a new character who is also immune to the spores. The plot for The Last of Us Part 2 might revolve around Ellie searching for others with the immunity to band together. This could serve as an introduction to the new character and her friends who saved her from death.
Probably the most out-there theory is this scene actually takes place in the future, showing a much older Ellie. That might explain why Bailey’s character’s name is censored. This would be similar to the flashback scenario above, but Ellie is now the mom giving birth to a new kid who will probably be immune to the spores. Surprisingly, the theory of Ellie being pregnant has been around since the game’s announcement, with the guitar seen in the reveal trailer potentially hiding a baby bump.
One thing that struck us about the trailer is all the biblical references. To smash Yara’s arm, Emily called to “clip her wings” in reference to an angel. Emily also mentions sin when putting the knife to the unnamed woman’s gut. At the very end of the trailer, Yara and Lev are gathering themselves and hear what sound like Clickers in the distance. This prompts Yara to say “Demons are coming.”
What’s this all about? I have two ideas. If this is a flashback, it’s possible people feared this was a plague sent from God before the government got word out about the spores and infections. Alternatively, it could be some god-fearing cult that gained a following since the outbreak. The second theory doesn’t really line up, since Yara and Lev are the ones talking about demons, but it’s possible the cult’s terminology has taken hold over in the area.
Here’s the big kicker: we know Naughty Dog intentionally puts misleading information in trailers. “We purposely deceived [players] with certain trailers," Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann said in an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine about the trailer for the first The Last of Us. "[The] shot where Joel’s on the floor and he looks kind of sick and he turns up. That shot was made just for the trailer. Just to make it look like he’s infected or there’s something wrong with him, and then it’s juxtaposed with a shot of Ellie holding a gun, so everyone’s like ‘Oh my God, Joel’s going to turn and Ellie’s going to have to shoot him at the end!’ That was constructed in such a way so that people would guess that and think that that’s the obvious ending, and then we could turn it on them.”
What does this all mean? You can speculate all you want, but we don’t know all the information yet, or even if the information we have is real. Ultimately, the only way to know what’s going on for sure is to just play through the game. Sadly, The Last of Us Part 2 doesn’t have a release date yet. In fact, the trailer didn’t even confirm a 2018 release date. It’s possible Naughty Dog will be taking a ton of time with this one, so we’ll probably have to wait until E3 2018 to learn more information.
