The Legend of Korra ended as Korra and Asami walked into the Spirit World, hand in hand. It’s been a couple years, but now we have a feel for what happens after their much-needed vacation. Dark Horse’s new comic book, Legend of Korra: Turf Wars, continues their romantic relationship and explores how they deal the aftermath of the new portal to the spirit world.
“Korra has to figure out how to find a new balance in the city with all this stuff that’s gone on,” co-creator Dante DiMartino told EW. “It’s gonna take place right after the finale, so it’s focusing on Korra and Asami’s relationship as a new threat emerges. It’s kind of like the aftermath dealing with the new portal in the city, and all the evacuees coming back to find their homes wiped out because of the portal.”
The exclusive images from EW show Korra and Asami enjoying their alone time together, racing up a cliff, picnicking and swimming together in the ocean. But things turn sour when they encounter an angry noble spirit who tells them Avatar should have kept the human and spirit worlds separate.
After the Legend of Korra finale, many fans were in denial about Korra and Asami’s lesbian relationship even though co-creator Bryan Konietzko explicitly said in a blog post from 2014 he aimed to make their attraction to one another as clear as possible. Though, to many others (and us) the organic and casual depiction of their relationship was extremely well received.
“You can celebrate it, embrace it, accept it, get over it, or whatever you feel the need to do, but there is no denying it. That is the official story,” he said
Illustrated by Irene Koh, the new Legend of Korra: Turf Wars comic book arrives in stores in June.
