Harrison Wells just doesn’t die on The Flash. Tom Cavanaugh keeps coming back to play different versions of the character: first the ‘real’ Harrison Wells, who was revealed as Eobard Thawne aka Reverse-Flash, then Harry from Earth 2, then H.R from Earth 19. Now, it appears Wentworth Miller’s character, Leonard Snart aka Captain Cold, is following the same path on Legends of Tomorrow.
Captain Cold died in the Legends of Tomorrow Season 1 finale when he sacrificed himself for the team. Then, Eobard Thawne recruited him for the Legion of Doom, going back in time to 2014 and bringing that version of him to the present, a version that was still a crook with bad intentions. But after the Legends defeated Legion of Doom, his brother Mick Rory dropped him back off in the 2014 timeline expecting the future to play out, which means Snart would join the Legends’ cause and die once again. Yes, it’s very confusing… and it’s about to become even more confusing.
The Legends of Tomorrow panel at San Diego Comic-Con surprised fans with news Wentworth Miller would return as Captain Cold. Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim expanded on the news at the Television Critics Association press tour. According to Collider, Snart will return, but not as the same person the Legends remember.
“I think the fact that we killed off Leonard in Season 1, it basically made it incumbent upon us, every time we do bring Wentworth [Miller] back, to do it in a different way. We have a really, really cool way of bringing him back this year, but I haven’t even pitched it to the network yet. We’re excited, but we haven’t even had a chance to tell Wentworth,” Guggenheim said.
Since the EP hasn’t told the network or Miller yet, it looks like Cold’s return may not happen until later in the season. Miller is so loved by fans that the series may drag out the promotion of his return. However, it may not be difficult to find a new way to bring Snart back, considering that when Sara used the spear of destinity to rewrite history, there was a time storm that broke time, leaving the Legends in present-day Los Angeles with dinosaurs.
“It’s pretty serious. I think the season finale of Season 2 gave you an inkling to Season 3. What we’re calling anachronisms are people, places and things that are displaced in time. We haven’t done this episode yet and we may not, but just as an example, it’s not a good idea to have Genghis Khan running around 1980s Wall Street. How do we fix these things? In episode 1 of the year, we’re dealing with Julius Caesar, who ends up in a time that he shouldn’t be in. That’s a different kind of time problem than we had last year.”
Guggenheim said the Legends will be dealing with the existential question of what their job really is, since the Time Masters are gone and their strategy doesn’t exactly seem to be working. Are you excited for the new season of Legends? Let us know in the comments.
