LG may have confirmed many details about the LG G5 unveiling before launch day, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t many other details to be uncovered. The LG G5 is expected to sport an always-on display as one of its main features, according to Android Authority .
The tech blog shared Tuesday evening an animated GIF, which reveals the nature of this LG G5 feature. It appears the LG G5 display will never set to black when idle, but will constantly show the time and date as well as various notifications such as missed calls, texts, calendar details and emails. While this feature has not been confirmed by LG, the GIF does include LG and LG G5 branding, making it look pretty legitimate.
The Always-on display is essentially an update to the second screen feature introduced on the LG V10 in September 2015, according to Android Authority . The second screen acts as a notification bar separate from the main 5.7-inch display.
The intent of such features is to give users easy access to their notifications without taking up vital screen real estate. While unconfirmed, we wonder if this would mean the LG G5 would have no second screen nor a notifications bar on the main screen.
The primary concern about an Always-on display is: How will it affect battery life? Rumors indicate LG will use an LCD display instead of the common OLED displays manufacturers use to combat things like battery drain. Displays are one of the top sources of battery consumption on a smartphone and LCD displays require even more battery power because they must have a blacklight to display the color black, SlashGear notes. OLED displays require little to no battery power to display the color black, making them a preferable choice for many smartphone makers. Specifics about the LG G5 display have not been confirmed by LG.
The LG G5 set to launch Feb. 21 in Barcelona. The device is expected to feature a 5.3-inch Quad HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip, a 16-megapixel dual-lens camera and a fingerprint scanner.
The LG G5 is anticipated to go up against the Samsung Galaxy S7 on the market. The Galaxy S7 is also expected to be unveiled on Feb. 21. The Korean manufacturer recently filed a trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for an Always-on display of it’s own, which has led pundits to believe the Galaxy S7 may have a similar feature.
