After the massive success of The Witcher Netflix series, the streaming giant is now reportedly working on an Assassin's Creed live-action series.
According to Variety, the project is a collaboration between Netflix and Ubisoft, which includes the production of a live-action, animated, and anime series. Ubisoft also shared the news on its own website, in which the Head of Ubisoft Film & Television Jason Altman said, “for more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise..we’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix, and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”
After the utter disappointment of the Assassin's Creed live-action film, fans are naturally skeptical about the Netflix series as well. Although we know that a Netflix series is in the works, the plot details remain unknown. Assassin's Creed, as a video game series, has changed quite a bit over its run. The games have now adopted an RPG strategy and shifted focus to emphasize its open-world design. It's unknown if the TV series will follow an established character or create a new protagonist.
Fans were also expecting The Witcher Netflix series to stay grounded to the game's lore, but the series is largely influenced by the books instead. The difference with Assassin's Creed is that there isn't any other source material to draw from.
In July, fans also learned that Ubisoft and Netflix are working on a Splinter Cell animated series. It seems that Ubisoft is now not only interested in producing world-class video games, but also venturing into various media domains.
On a similar note, the next two weeks are going to be huge for Ubisoft, as the company is releasing Watch Dogs: Legion tomorrow, followed by Assassin's Creed Valhalla on November 10.
