It’s been four long years since the last game in the Mafia series, and to call its latest installment, Mafia III, a disappointment would be an understatement. Mired with a ton of bugs and issues that severely hampered the entire gameplay experience, the game was received with at best mixed reception from fans of the series. The potential is still there, of course, and it may well be realized as 2K Games just formally announced Mafia: Trilogy, a collection of the three games in the series. Check out the teaser below.
While more details are still on the way in a couple more days, leaks prevail once again to shed some more light on the games included in Mafia: Trilogy. According to a Twitter user fast enough to grab information on a Microsoft Store listing, the collection will include remastered and fully realized versions of the first two games: Mafia: Definitive Edition, which is also a full remake and due out on August 28, and Mafia II: Definitive Edition, a remaster due out on May 19. Mafia III: Definitive Edition was not part of the listings, but it’s safe to assume that it will be included since the collection is a Trilogy after all.
According to the listing, Mafia: Definitive Edition has been re-made with improved graphics as well as an expanded story as you rise through the ranks in 1930s Illinois during the Prohibition Era. The screenshots show just how much the developers have added to the original graphics, with overall better lighting and color. Mafia II: Definitive Edition, on the other hand, is a remastered version of what is considered to be the highlight of the series. It takes place in the 1940s to 50s in New York, during the Golden Era of organized crime. Mafia II: Definitive Edition will include the main game and all downloadable content releases in one full package.
This is very welcomed news for fans of the series as it brings back two classic titles in an overhauled form. That said, I wish that Mafia III: Definitive Edition also gets its issues fixed for this major rerelease.
Mafia: Trilogy is set to be released for the PS4, Xbox One and PC.
