The first trailer for Middle-earth: Shadow of War , the newly announced sequel to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, has been published by Warner Bros. Interactive. Early details on Talion’s next adventure remain scarce, as is typically the case following new game announcements, but we won’t have to wait long for a better idea of what to expect from Middle-earth: Shadow of War.

Less than 48 hours after Target spilled the beans on Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Monolith and WB Interactive have released the first trailer for the upcoming sequel to Shadow of Mordor. We don’t get to see any gameplay this week -- that’s not coming until March 8 -- but the new trailer (and a corresponding press release) do offer some idea of what comes next for Talion and his spectral ally, Celebrimbor. Players can expect to encounter plenty more iconic enemies from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, including the ringwraiths and a balrog.

The studio isn’t saying much about the sequel yet; however, WB Interactive President David Haddad and Monolith Vice President Michael de Plater did offer Middle-earth fans some insight in a press release for today’s announcement. And it probably won’t be all that surprising to learn Shadow of Mordor ’s beloved Nemesis system will play a big role in Shadow of War.

“Monolith Productions continues to innovate by introducing deeper, more personalized gameplay experiences, coupled with authentic storytelling,” said Haddad. “ Middle-earth: Shadow of War truly drives the genre forward by taking the Nemesis System to new heights and allowing players to create their own personal journey within Middle-earth.”

“We massively expanded every dimension of the game,” de Plater added. “Including the world, the story, the RPG systems, the core gameplay and of course the personal player stories.”

For an early idea of what to expect from Middle-earth: Shadow of War, take a few minutes to watch the new announcement trailer from WB Interactive and Monolith Productions. Then head down to the comments section and let us know what you’d like to see in Middle-earth: Shadow of War when the game hits PC and consoles later this year.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The game debuts Aug. 22, 2017.

Shadow Of War Players Will Tell Better Stories Than The Game
And the next chapter of Talion and Celebrimbor’s story was pretty underwhelming. But the stories people tell about their Nemesis encounters, which are more chaotic than ever before, will undoubtedly shape public opinion more than any criticism Shadow of War garners along the way.
  • Nemesis system does an even better job of letting players witness and tell unique, action-driven stories
  • Most of the narrative content is just plain boring
