A few weeks ago, Sony announced that Ken Griffey Jr. would be the cover athlete for MLB The Show 17. The announcement was a little early as Sony normally waits until December to release such news. Since the announcement was so early before the release hype normally begins, you had to figure that something would be released in the date slot where a cover athlete would have normally been announced.
During PlayStation Experience 2016, Sony released the first MLB The Show 17 trailer and the news was surprising. While the trailer featured the normal greatness that we have come to expect from the MLB The Show franchise, the last few seconds of the trailer showed a new mode that perked up many eyebrows at first glance. According to Sr. Community Specialist & Game Designer Ramone Russell, this mode will bring you back to simpler times.
“Introducing “Retro Mode,” a retro gameplay experience that pays homage to the classic baseball games many of us grew up playing. Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more.”
Eagle-eyed fans who watched the trailer over and over again noticed some other things that will add to the realism of MLB The Show 17. Things like seeing MLB Statcast, an analytical system Major League Baseball uses to track stats. There was a Roberto Alomar sighting, which means new legends are being included inside the game and its Diamond Dynasty mode. There was an outfield celebration among Boston Red Sox players and finally, a dugout handshake which was not seen last year.
Of course it is only December, so Sony wasn’t going to release everything about the game at PlayStation Experience. We are still months away from the release, so there is still much we will learn about the game and iDigitalTimes will be along for the ride leading up to the release of MLB The Show 17 on March 28.
