In about a month’s time Monster Hunter World will release its first main expansion, Iceborne. This is no mere expansion, though, as from what we’ve seen so far there’s a huge amount of content heading our way including a wide variety of new monsters, a new big area to explore, and of course more weapons and armor to craft, in addition to various new game mechanics.
But while the release for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are being hyped to no end, the PC platform has, for the most part, been relatively quiet, owing to the fact that expansions, updates, and other new content are slower to arrive there compared to consoles. The initial release for Iceborne on PC was dated for Winter this year, but now it seems that date has been pushed back, as Capcom notes in a tweet.
You read that right. PC players of Monster Hunter World will be able to play Iceborne in January 2020, a timeline which has not really pleased some of the avid PC players. I also play Monster Hunter World on PC, and while I admit that Capcom has made some strides into ultimately shortening the wait time in between releases for consoles and PC (Monster Hunter World shipped for consoles in January 2018, and for PC in August 2018 – a seven-month wait) it’s still kind of disappointing that PC players have to hold out that long to experience the new stuff the game has to offer.
The delay has always been attributed to Capcom seeking to make sure that their first actual foray into the PC market was as well-optimized as possible. It’s very telling, however, when the game first released for the PC and it shipped with a very poor and unoptimized online experience, which lead to its first several months on Steam bearing a mixed reception. All of this said, I will be keeping a very close eye on the upcoming PC release this January, just to see if it was worth the wait – if not, then there are absolutely no more reasons for not simultaneously releasing these updates and expansions across all platforms.
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne will be released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on September 6.
