Ever since its January release, Those Awesome Guys' Move or Die has become a popular party game thanks to its ability to do this:
"Move or Die is the game you know how to play if you know its name," said co-creator Nicolae Berbec. Characters lose life if they stand still, which creates the fast-paced, frenetic atmosphere. "It's a four player party game that ruins friendships, and the rules change every 20 seconds."
You need only watch people play Move or Die to get its appeal. Nothing brings out the joy of friendship like petty competition, and Move or Die is the ultimate environment for that to grow. There's a lot of party games out there, but the concept behind Move or Die was to create a space where all of the party games could happen at once. It succeeds, and Move or Die can be very, very fun to play.
"Especially when you're drunk," said Berbec.
He was (kind of) joking, but he illustrates a good point. The game is fun when you're a little tipsy because it's a simple and fun game. Anyone can play, which is important for a good party game. Berbec and Those Awesome Guys don't want the party to stop anytime soon, either, which is why they're current plan is just to continue to make content.
"Move or Die is a game that keeps evolving, specifically because of its structure," he said. "It allows more and more content."
Like the latest update, which was the game's first. It added mutators to the game, which now allows certain players to pick a special ability, like jet packs or double jumps, that affect everyone in a particular round. It's a major change, but it won't be the only one as Berbes said the team plans to make significant updates alongside the new characters and game modes you'd normally expect. And a lot of that input is going to come from the growing community, which is already changing the game on its own.
Players have begun making mods to create their own custom characters, from unique avatars to licensed icons, and for Those Awesome Guys this is a sign that a growing fanbase wants them to keep their focus on the game for now and not worry about what's next for the studio.
"Right now we're focusing on Move or Die because we want to keep it updated," Berbec said. "We don't really have any plans for a specific title. For now, it's Move or Die."
