Even though Mr. Robot is predicted to run at least four or five seasons, creator Sam Esmail is already working on a new project. He’s secured a deal with Universal to remake the classic German sci fi film, Metropolis , into a TV series. The studio plans to release the series in two to three years.
At the time of it’s release in 1927, Metropolis was one of the most expensive movies ever made and is considered groundbreaking for its special effects. THR sources say Universal’s budget is $10 million per episode. How exactly Esmail is involved isn’t yet clear. For Mr. Robot , Esmail is known to be very hands on in the process--even directing every single episode.
The adaptation is definitely in Esmail’s wheelhouse of social science fiction and has similar themes to Mr. Robot, even though it is a silent film. Directed by Fritz Lang, Metropolis took place 100 years in the future. In the year 2026, rich elite rule from highrises while the poorest live underground operating machinery that runs the city. Two lovers, one from each walk of life, decide to find a way to bring down the system.
It’s still unclear where Metropolis will find it’s home. According to THR, Metropolis won’t necessarily end up on a network like USA or SyFy. The studio is looking at streaming options as well.
