The 2016 MTV Movie Awards nominations were announced Tuesday, in case you’re looking for the year’s best movie according to people who fill out online polls. The big winners among this year’s nominees are Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is up for 11 golden popcorn statues, and Deadpool, nominated for eight.

The nominees for Movie of the Year are:

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Creed

Deadpool

Jurassic World

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Straight Outta Compton

You may have noticed that one of the nominees is one of the worst mainstream movies in recent years (roar).

The MTV Movie Awards’ strategy of polling 12-year-olds has generated some interesting results over the years. Previous Movie of the Year awards have gone to Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean 2: The Worst of the Sequels, Wedding Crashers, Napoleon Dynamite and There’s Something About Mary. Twilight movies won four years in a row.

But the MTV Movie Awards have one major advantage over the more pretentious Oscars: a willingness to trumpet genre films. Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Pulp Fiction, Scream and The Matrix all won in years when the Academy was busy picking yawns like American Beauty and The English Patient or cinematic antichrist, Forrest Gump.

The MTV Movie Awards is also known for its slightly more inventive categories. This year includes “Best Hero,” which Charlize Theron will obviously win for Mad Max: Fury Road, “Best Villain,” which will probably go to Adam Driver, and “Best Virtual Performance,” a category the Oscars would have added a decade ago if Academy members could figure out how to access the shared Google spreadsheet. It’s just too bad this year won’t see the return of the “Best Scared-As-Shit Performance” Award.
