Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar last night for his work in The Revenant , after being nominated on six previous occasions. Despite the fact that the actor’s victory was anticipated and predicted, it still managed to be the most discussed topic on Twitter.
According to Twitter, DiCaprio’s victory for Best Actor became the most-tweeted minute of an Oscars telecast, with 440,000 tweets per minute. The previous record was set in 2014, when Oscar host Ellen Degeneres tweeted a star-packed selfie that resulted in 255,000 tweets per minute.
“With host Chris Rock (@chrisrock) at the helm, the show was filled with moments that sparked reactions on Twitter,” wrote Twitter on their blog. “Leonardo DiCaprio’s (@LeoDiCaprio) win for Best Actor generated more than 440,000 Tweets per minute, the most-Tweeted minute of an Oscars telecast ever, beating out the previous record of 255,000 Tweets per minute, set when @TheEllenShow Tweeted this star studded selfie.”
Other notable moments that resulted in an abundance of tweets included the surprise victory of Spotlight for Best Picture, and Mad Max: Fury Road scoring its sixth award of the night for Sound Mixing.
