In a recent interview with Eric Newman, one of the two executive producers in charge of the Netflix show Narcos, Slash Film revealed several large clues as to the fate of Wagner Moura’s character on the show, Pablo Escobar.
“He will die. The design of the show is we told 15 years of history in season one. At the point of Escobar’s escape which is the summer of 1992, Escobar has 18 months to live,” Newman said “That’s not something we can change. To stretch that out beyond another season would be disingenuous of us. That story was always designed to have an ending.”
However, just because season 2 of Narcos will cover the death of Escobar doesn’t mean that the Narcos storyline ends there. Newman spoke to Slash Film at length about the possibilities the series has for expansion, including possibly incorporating the Guatemalan civil war or even the rise of cartel crime in Mexico.
Another possibility is the show could rely on the use of flashbacks in season 3 of Narcos to keep Moura and his rendition of Escobar involved with the show, although that is nothing more than pure speculation.
The actor’s portrayal as the lead character has quickly become what people associate with Narcos . Newman says the show is fully planning on taking advantage of that and plans to make season two “more character driven. Less voiceover I hope.”
“To tell you the truth, most of my thinking is about season two because we’re in the middle of it and I haven’t thought that much about where do we go from here. I just want the best version of season two,” Newman told Slash Film. “The first season was a lot of information, a lot of setup. We need to tell you about this world. Now that we’re in the world, we can spend more time with the people in the world and the characters.”
Narcos is currently in production for its second season, which has an estimated release date of August 2016. The show had a minor shakeup recently after Adam Fierro ( The Walking Dead , The Shield ), who had replaced season 1 showrunner Chris Brancato ( Of Kings and Prophets ), left the show midway through production.
The show decided to not fill Fierro’s position after his departure and role’s responsibility was officially split Newman and Jose Padilha, one of the original creators of the show.
