NBA 2K18 version 1.10 arrived Wednesday afternoon, and you may be wondering what it does because 2K hasn’t released any patch notes. A tweet from the official NBA2KLeague Twitter account comes through with the details, but they aren’t very exciting. Just like the 1.09 update before it, this patch also “optimizes things for the NBA 2K League Combine” that’s happening now.
The NBA 2K League Combine takes place Feb. 2 through Feb. 21, and it’s the second major yearly tournament in the NBA 2K esports scene. This round features 102 contestants that gained eligibility by winning at least 50 game’s during January’s League Qualifier. Gameplay within the tournament consists of six-minute quarters and standard Pro-Am rules.
As a major tournament with official graphics, regulations and tournament ladders, we imagine update 1.10 is meant to offer athletes exclusive UI elements that provide the best competitive experience. That kind of stuff is critical for the event, but it doesn’t serve anyone beyond the select pool of 102 players. It would seem Patch 10 does nothing that impacts the moment-to-moment basketball in all standard modes. In fact, because the Combine carries through Feb. 21, there probably won’t be any public-focused patches for NBA 2K18 until after the proceedings conclude. After all, even small gameplay tweaks can have major ramifications during highly competitive matches.
NBA 2K18 was last truly updated via the game’s seventh patch at the end of December. Balance issues, Pro-Am bugs and t-shirt VC refunds were the talk of the town back then. Since those major disruptions have been resolved, 2K and Visual Concepts seem hesitant to disrupt the current gameplay balance. Minor bugs still exist and the VC grind remains frustrating, but players of all skill levels are starting to understand how the latest franchise entry should truly be played.
Because the 2K League Combine functions within windows of specific play times, additional updates may be deployed before the tournament is over.
NBA 2K18 is available now on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Switch and PC. Because update 1.10 was released for a very specific reason, it may not arrive on all platforms.
