Steven Spielberg may have grown sentimental in his old age - it’s hard to imagine him melting faces in Indiana Jones 5 - but it looks like his adaptation of The BFG will include the children’s book’s most compelling and disgusting characters: the People Eaters. The new trailer for The BFG reveals a lot more about the Big Friendly Giant himself, plus the Giant Country where lives. But the real treat for fans of the book is our first look at the disgusting stuff that Roald Dahl always excelled at, in this case the other giants and the BFG’s disgusting food: snozzcumbers.
In Dahl’s book, the world is terrorized by nine man-eating giants: The Manhugger, The Meatdripper, The Childchewer, The Butcher Boy, The Bloodbottler, The Maidmasher, The Fleshlumpeater, The Bonecruncher and The Gizzardgulper. All nine appear at the very end of the new trailer to loom over the Big Friendly Giant.
In the world of The BFG humans are delicious, the giant connoisseurs always in search of the best tasting man-flesh. Only The BFG resists the people-eating urge, forcing him to eat only the disgusting snozzcumbers (which you can see at 1:20, and yeah, they’re gross).
With Bill Hader credited as The Bloodbottler and Jemaine Clement as The Fleshlumpeater, it looks like The BFG is going all in on the predatory, monstrous carnivores that made The BFG both Dahl’s bloodiest and most heartwarming book.
The BFG will be in theaters on July 1.
