A new gameplay trailer for Extinction, the upcoming human-versus-titan (but not those titans) action title from Iron Galaxy and Maximum Games, offers a closer look at some of the skills and abilities players will rely on. The new trailer also confirms Extinction’s business model isn’t built around microtransactions. They aren’t even in the game.
Announced at E3 2017, Extinction sees players going to war with the Ravenii, towering ogres from another planet who hope to literally stamp out the last vestiges of human life. Players will guide Avil, humanity’s last hope, a warrior capable of learning many different skills and abilities to challenge the invaders. The game doesn’t appear to be open-world, but will ship with a “deep story campaign” and “dynamic side missions.” Environments will feature a number of interactive elements and players can even use Avil’s whip to quickly scale the Ravenii and/or reposition Avil to avoid incoming attacks.
In the new trailer, Extinction Executive Producer Derek Neal provides background information on Avil’s situation and the various skills he’ll be able to learn over the course of the campaign. The studio expects Avil’s Rune Slowdown technique to be one of the community’s most common choices because it lets Extinction’s protagonist “essentially freeze time.” Other abilities make it easier to break Ravenii armor, disable the invaders’ protective runes and avoid dangerous elements of an invader’s equipment while climbing/standing on them. Avil can spend skill points, presumably accrued in battle, to learn or upgrade his skills. Figuring out the best times to deploy each ability will be a central component of Extinction’s gameplay.
