Despite a recent delay (to expand the multiplayer offerings and add a single-player mode), Friday the 13th: The Game developers Gun Media and IllFonic have continued to release new pics, more footage and details. It’s been a remarkably open development process, complete with a “Virtual Cabin” of development assets and character models available to backers. Earlier this month we spoke with Executive Producer Randy Greenback about the unbelievable steps taken to digitize Jason Voorhees. But there’s always a little more to discover about Friday the 13th: The Game.
On Monday Gun Media released new gameplay footage of a counselor escaping Jason by diving through the window of a cabin, bloodying herself in the process:
A little over a week before, they uploaded video of the beta menu splash screen (the first beta round will be for PC preorders only, unfortunately). Yeah, it’s just a menu screen, but it shows off the incredible detail that went into the Jason Voorhees model from Friday the 13th: Part 3 and what sounds like a new track from original Friday the 13th composer Harry Manfredini.
In addition to Jason from Part 3, Friday the 13th: The Game will feature Jasons from Friday the 13th Part 2, Part VI: Jason Lives, Part VII: The New Blood, Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan and Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, plus a new Jason designed by legendary makeup effects artist Tom Savini. And the differences will be more than cosmetic.
In addition to the new videos put out, the past couple of weeks have seen some images from Friday the 13th: The Game choked with moody lighting and a sense of dread.
And one new image revealed an unexpected new feature.
Working together with your counselors to repair and start a car has been a known win condition in Friday the 13th: The Game for a while, but it always sounded (to me) more like a round ender. You fix the car, counselors win. But instead, fixing the car is just the beginning of your escape from Jason. He can still thwart you:
Friday the 13th: The Game ’s “hide and seek, plus murder” multiplayer is looking better and better. The bigger question mark at this point is the single-player mode, which the official FAQ describes as “objective-based missions where you take control of Jason. You’ll get to see missions that will remind you of the movies, as well as entirely new scenarios to sink your machete into.”
The more revealed about Friday the 13th: The Game, the more it looks worth the wait. The multiplayer mode will be available in “early 2017” for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, with the single-player mode following that summer.
