Publisher Square Enix announced recently that NieR: Automata has broken a significant success milestone. Since it launched two years ago in 2017, the anime-inspired action game has sold over four million copies worldwide.
For Square Enix, four million definitely isn't record-breaking, but sales continue to grow, and NieR: Automata has proven to be one of the company's most critically-acclaimed titles yet. While Square Enix's other games have sold more copies over the years - the best-selling one being the legendary 1997 title Final Fantasy VII, with over 13,000,000 copies sold, followed by 2013's Tomb Raider with 11,000,000 copies sold - NieR: Automata is no pushover.
Following a highly-anticipated launch, NieR: Automata quickly became one of the highest-rated games on Steam, and continues to receive very positive reviews well into 2019. In 2017, it won The Game Award for Best Score/Soundtrack against titles like Persona 5, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
For a story-driven single player experience, NieR: Automata has performed very well in the two years after it's launch. Of course, it's easily overshadowed by games with multiplayer components like GTA V, which recently broke a milestone itself, with 110 million copies sold worldwide. But that's doesn't mean NieR: Automata performed poorly. For a clearer comparison, one of the most popular single-player only games ever made, TES V: Skyrim, has cleared over 30 million since it launched in 2011.
NieR: Automata takes players on a quest to reclaim a dystopian world overrun by robots and other powerful machines. As androids 2B, 9S, and A2, players battle through armies of machines in humanity's last-ditch effort to take back the Earth. If you want to see for yourself what all the fuss is about, you can get a copy of NieR: Automata for PC, PS4, or Xbox One.
