Nintendo NX reveal hype has hit its climax as the hardware maker continues to stay silent amongst constantly mounting rumors. One trusted industry analyst has gone on record to say console details might be known in just a few days.
Takashi Mochizuki is a respected contributor to The Wall Street Journal, and, for the purposes of today’s discussion, he’s been at the tip of the sword when it comes to NX chatter. About a year ago, he found out that software development kits were being distributed and famously described the system as a product with “industry-leading chips." Since then, he’s also published articles about NX smartphone game compatibility and cartridge-based features. Suffice to say, he’s spurred lots of mainstream speculation.
On Sunday, Mochizuki returned to Twitter to share his thoughts on the much-anticipated NX reveal. “Speculation is Nintendo would unveil NX details in coming week,” it was said. “I guess all we can do is wait,” he added, noting that there is “no announcement from the company yet.”
This isn’t the first time the Journal has speculated about an NX reveal in October. In fact, that exact sentiment was expressed by the publication at the beginning of September. Eurogamer’s initial NX leak suggested a September showcase, but that obviously didn’t come to fruition.
While it’s not fully understood where the “next week” rumor truly came from, evidence links to a report from Macquarie Capital Securities that garnered attention last week. It initially said the NX was “coming next week,” but the word “reveal” was added to the sentence after publication. This idea is further fueled by an unsubstantiated rumor that the NX will be revealed on Oct. 21, the five-year anniversary of Nintendo’s first Direct presentation.
As with all NX rumors, it’s hard to know precisely what’s fact and what’s fiction. After all, it’s worth pointing out that Nintendo is expected to hold an investors meeting on Oct. 26. While an initial NX reveal there isn’t as glamorous as a Direct, it’s not unprecedented. The 3DS was first discussed during a similar gathering.
In other words, despite the NX reveal hype rising, take recent rumors with a grain of salt. Even though there’s a trusted source on this one, invalid info can spread pretty quickly.
