Persona 5 release date us protagonist arcana fusion phantom thieves Atlus

Over the weekend at PlayStation Experience 2016, Atlus debuted a new English-language trailer for Persona 5, focusing primarily on the game’s storyline, as opposed to previous featurettes detailing gameplay mechanics and characters. In the trailer, it's clear that each of the Phantom Thieves is out for revenge against an unjust world, attempting to right the wrongs that have been done to them.

Atlus (via Persona Central) offered the following synopsis for the new trailer:

“After having his life ruined, the main protagonist of the game must start anew as the newest transfer high-school student at Tokyo’s Shujin Academy. However, he’ll soon discover that he has the ability to enter the hearts of people and force them to confront their true selves (for better or worse). With his newly discovered powers, the protagonist and his raucous group of outcast friends form the Phantom Thieves of Hearts to help unmask the ills of society. It’s only a matter of time before their actions become noticed by undesirables, so will they be able to bring justice to everyone who deserves it in time?”

Check out the story trailer below:

The protagonist arrives to his new high school and immediately sets rumors flying about his badass criminal past. There’s some nice Persona summoning sequences, lots of head-clutching migraines, MC pulling a baddie’s head off (zoinks!) and some nice anime cutscenes. The voice acting, as ever, sounds stellar -- it’s clear Atlus is investing a lot of time and care into a strong localization.

As much as we’re enjoying Final Fantasy XV right now (warts and all), we’re still super hyped for P5. Maybe even moreso than before. By the looks of it, P5’s not looking to reinvent the wheel and be everything to everyone, just giving loyal fans more of what they know and already love about the series.

Persona 5 comes to PS4 and PS3 in North America April 4. You can pre-order a digital copy of the game via the PlayStation store, here. Digital pre-orders get a special Izanagi persona DLC from Persona 4.

Is it just us, or is the speaker around the 55-second mark the same voice as the FFVII Remake teaser? (Not that we’ve watched that a zillion times or anything.) Let us know your thoughts on Persona 5 and the new story trailer in the comments.
