We’ll have to wait until Thursday evening’s Game Awards broadcast to get our first in-motion look at the desert map coming to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds in a few weeks. But developer PUBG Corporation published plenty of early information about the environment, including details on some of the biggest points of interest (POIs) we’ll encounter on PUBG’s desert map.
We still don’t have an official release date for Miramar, the official name for Battlegrounds’ next map, but we did get some background information on some of the POIs we’ll loot when the new map is released. PUBG Corporation outlined eight unique cities and towns on Steam, including the map’s most populous region (Los Leones) and smaller destinations like Valle del Mar and Pecado. The studio offered a handful of details on each location, mostly regarding the supplies and fortifications we’ll see at each site. It’s also interesting to see the Battlegrounds team hinting at whatever left the region abandoned in the first place.
Here’s the official description of Monte Nuevo:
Monte Nuevo is the picture of a town besieged. Ramshackle walls built to protect its residents now allow players ample cover to explore the well-stocked compound.
There are still many locations we don’t know anything about, including the island settlements in the southwest corner of the map. But it’s probably safe to assume those details will be released in the coming weeks. Maybe even during the Miramar gameplay reveal.
PUBG Corporation also made a handful of additional announcements on Twitter this week. We’re excited to hear there will be differences between each map’s loot table. Miramar will have at least one exclusive vehicle and one exclusive firearm. It wouldn’t be a dealbreaker if some clothing or signage from PUBG’s island map was reused for the desert map, but we’re thrilled at the prospect of map-exclusive vehicles and weapons. It’s a design decision that gives weight to the environment, forcing players to adjust their strategies (or at least their desired loot haul) based on the current map. The geography also seems more varied in the new setting.
For more information on Miramar, along with a handful of additional screenshots, check out the latest update on Battlegrounds’ Steam page. And for for more on PUBG’s future, revisit Brendan Greene’s thoughts on mod support, parity between the game’s graphics settings and the potential addition of a cinematic camera suite. We also spoke with PUBG Corp. CEO Chang Han Kim, back in September, about the game’s lack of rocket launchers. He also offered some insight on the growing pains that come with selling 20 million copies of your game.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available in Early Access. The launch build is expected to hit Steam in late December and a Xbox One port is currently slated for Dec. 12.
