After many rumors and wishes from fans, the Netflix/Marvel Punisher series is happening!
According to Entertainment Weekly, the Punisher Netflix series will spin out of Daredevil Season 2 and will have Jon Bernthal reprise his role as Frank Castle with writer and executive producer Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal, Casualty) will serve as showrunner.
UPDATE: Marvel.com has posted more information about the upcoming Punisher series.
“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,'” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb, “Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring 'Marvel’s The Punisher' to Netflix.”
The Punisher series will be the sixth series ordered from Netflix/Marvel. Luke Cage is currently in production with a Sept. 30 premiere date and Iron Fist is now shooting with a 2017 release date.
Not to mention the Defenders series that will see the Netflix/Marvel heroes, Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage team up.
Netflix has gone on Twitter and is all about the Punisher, changing its Twitter avatar and posting this teaser video.
There was no other information regarding when the Punisher series will begin shooting or a release date but it’s likely that the powers that be will want to capitalize on Bernthal’s performance in Daredevil Season 2 and try and get the series done for 2017. But that’s just speculation at this time.
Marvel recently debunked rumors of a Punisher series but it looks like it had a change of heart.
