Publisher and developer Sega has just announced that the beloved puzzle game series Puyo Puyo and the Tetris franchise will once again come together in Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. The action arcade game will be launching for the Playstation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
For those who do not know, Puyo Puyo Tetris is an action arcade game the combines mechanics of two puzzle game legends – Puyo Puyo and Tetris. Players are tasked with stacking, chaining, and combo-ing their way to victory and reaching high scores.
The game’s predecessor, Puyo Puyo Tetris, consisted of a variety of game modes such as its single-player adventure mode that offers ten unique acts, each with ten changes that are made up of different characters from each of the puzzle games’ universes. Each stage provides a unique mechanic and challenge that players need to overcome to advance on to the next one. Multiplayer game modes such as Multiplayer Arcade, Versus, and Big Bang are also present and can support two to four players. For challenging game modes, Puyo Puyo Tetris offers Swap and Fusion, which require quick, on-the-fly thinking. And finally, there is a Party Mode that has special items that can either harm or help players.
So, what should fans expect from Puyo Puyo Tetris 2? First off, the game will now include a brand-new story filled with a unique cast of characters in its Adventure Mode. Also, Skill Battle Mode has been added to the sequel, which will introduce eight rare in-game item cards plus three special cards from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. These item cards are available with the launch edition of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 and will provide specific bonuses during battle and can quickly turn the tides in any match. Improved Online Modes will also be added to the game, such as game-specific leagues, free play for up to four players, online rankings, and more. Finally, Tournaments and Lessons Features will cater to those who are either veterans of the series, or newcomers to the game.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 will launch for all consoles except the PlayStation 5 and PC on December 8. The PlayStation 5 version will get a holiday release, while the PC version will release through Steam in early 2021.
