Rainbow Six Siege is four years old now and will enter Year 5 in a couple of weeks. Even after all this time, the game is missing one major accessibility feature. Color-blind fans of the game have been asking for color filters for a while now. Back in 2019, Ubisoft confirmed that there was no plan for such a feature. However, Art Director Alex Karpazis said at the Six Invitational 2020 that they are working on a solution for this issue.
“We’re working on something right now,” Karpazis said to PC Gamer. “We want it to be as accessible as possible to all of our players, so we’re making efforts on that”. Karpazis did not reveal any other details, so we don’t know how will this mode work or when will it release.
This is not the first time developers have made such a promise. Back in 2018, Community Developer Craig Robinson also said that they are working to improve the accessibility of Siege. Unfortunately, that never came to fruition. We can only hope that this time will be different. Demand for a color-blind mode has also been increasing. Siege's official subreddit gets an average of two posts per month regarding this wanted feature.
This isn’t really a special request, as almost every major multiplayer game like Battlefield 5 and Overwatch has this feature already. People who are suffering from color-blindness see Siege as a completely different game. Many players claim that they have trouble seeing thin red tripwires of a Claymore or the red dot sight of guns. This surely puts them at a very big disadvantage compared to the rest of the players.
Every game requires a different type of tweaking to make accommodation for color-blindness, with something like the color palate of Overwatch differing from that off Siege. Developers also have to be extra careful to make sure that non-colorblind players can't use color filter mode to gain an advantage.
So what do you think? Do you want the game to have a color-blind mode? Do you think other players might abuse the feature? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
