Just a few days after Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak posted record-high sales, Capcom announced another huge sales milestone, this time around for Resident Evil. Resident Evil 2 Remake, the critically acclaimed remake of the iconic survival horror title, posted over 10 million units sold, making it one of the most commercially successful games in the franchise yet. Resident Evil 2 Remake was launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam in January 2019, followed by special native releases on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series a month ago.
Resident Evil 2 Remake previously posted 9.6 million sales in March of this year, and the game hitting the huge 10 million mark can be attributed to the latest release on new-gen hardware. This version of Resident Evil 2 Remake launched concurrently with PS5 and Xbox Series native versions of Resident Evil 3 Remake and Resident Evil 7 Biohazard . All three titles featured upgraded graphics, ray tracing, higher frame rates, and 3D audio. Thanks to its DualSense features, the PS5 version also included more immersive controls via haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
With this, Resident Evil 2 Remake is now a runner-up for the best-selling game in the Resident Evil franchise. The record-holder remains Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, first released on consoles and PC in 2017. The game is still considered the main turning point for the series, with Resident Evil 7 Biohazard being a major renaissance for the longtime survival horror franchise.
In terms of other titles from the Capcom brand, Monster Hunter World still reigns king at 20 million units sold. Resident Evil 7 Biohazard shares the second spot with Monster Hunter Rise, with the Switch and PC-exclusive title now sitting pretty at over 10 million worldwide. Sunbreak, the game’s first major expansion, posted 2 million additional DLC sales not long after its release on both platforms.
Capcom looks to continue its Resident Evil dominance with the planned release of Resident Evil 4 Remake on March 24, 2023. The game is a remake of the original 2005 title, regarded as one of the best in the series and for popularizing the over-the-shoulder shooter archetype in action games.
