It’s taken some time but it appears that RuneScape is finally being released for the PC. The game is officially making its debut to Steam on October 14. The launch is also going to offer bespoke membership packages as well as achievements. There’s also going to be a RuneScape Community Hub that will be going live soon, which is going to feature articles, weekly announcements, and even guides.
However, that’s not all. Fans should be glad to know that the Old School RuneScape is also going to be released for the PC. The classic version is launching sometime in early 2021.
If this is the first time you’re hearing about this, RuneScape was developed by Jagex and was released in January 2001. What made it unique was that it was an entirely browser-based game. Since then it has been reworked multiple times, with the latest version, RuneScape 3, released in July 2013. As a bit of trivia, the game has been recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest and most-updated free MMORPG in the world.
Old School RuneScape is actually a separate and older version of the game which dates back to August 2007. This one is still maintained alongside the game’s original client.
RuneScape is game which allows players to choose their own path through quests and lets them progress through 27 diverse skills in order to shape a single character. As the game is about to celebrate its 20th year, it has welcomed almost 285 million player accounts.
In a press release, Jagex CEO Phil Mansell revealed that the company is working to make the RuneScape universe accessible to more players worldwide. After the game was released for the mobile platform, Mansell said that they worked on making desktop versions available and that “making them accessible to the Steam community is an important step in achieving this goal.”
In a post on the RuneScape website, Jagex's Executive Producer, simply known as Mod Warden, said that the launch on Steam doesn’t mean the work stops. He said that they’re going to “continue to work with our partners to brings RuneScape everywhere we can, and to make it more accessible than ever.”
