The Samsung Galaxy S7 is on track for a late February launch, but the curveball Samsung may throw is launching three smartphones instead of the usual two. Tech informant Evan Blass, aka Evleaks recently tweeted out branding for three Samsung smartphones, the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge and Galaxy S7 Edge +.
If true, this would indicate that Samsung plans to release one standard sized phone with a flat display, one standard sized phone with a curved display and one phablet with a curved display. While many manufacturers have taken to announcing more than one phone during flagship launches, the unveiling of three phones at a time is unprecedented. But there is speculation that Samsung has a master plan brewing in launching a phablet in the spring, when it usually launches its smaller flagships.
Samsung announced the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note 5 together just five months ago. The Galaxy S6 Edge+ launched in several more markets than the Galaxy Note 5, which wasn’t available at launch in markets like the U.K.
Android Central suggested Samsung could be trying to phase out the Galaxy Note line, or at least aiming to release more than one phablet flagship in the year. Since the Edge + is a part of the Galaxy S line and not the Galaxy Note line, it makes sense for future devices to be associated more with other similar devices. This way, the Galaxy Note line will likely have a spotlight in the fall.
Currently rumored specs for the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge and Galaxy S7 Edge + include a 5.1-inch and 5.7-inch Quad HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 or Exynos 8890 chip, 4GB of RAM, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB internal storage with possible microSD expansion, a 12.3-megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture and a 5-megapixel front camera and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow under Samsung’s TouchWiz interface.
The devices may also feature fingerprint and iris scanners as well a 3D touch display branded as ClearForce, an IP67 water resistance rating and USB Type-C ports with Quick Charge 3.0.
The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge may feature a 3,000-mAh battery while the Galaxy S7 Edge+ may feature a 3,600-mAh cell.
