Sega's Eternal Champions is Getting a Live-Action Movie Adaptation

Have you ever heard of Eternal Champions? Unless you're a die-hard Sega fan or a very avid player of fighting games, you probably haven't, and it's for good reason. The fighting game, which was released more than three decades ago, has been largely forgotten.

However, that is no longer the case as it has been revealed that the game will get a live-action movie adaptation.

While nothing has been confirmed about the movie's plot, there are other details about it that have already been reported.

"Jurassic World" series writer Derek Connolly will be in charge of writing the movie, according to a report. Toru Nakahara, who is best known for his work on the adaptation of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, is one of the producers.

Aside from Nakahara, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger have all reportedly joined the movie as producers.

The adaptation of Eternal Champions has come largely as a surprise due to the fact that the game has been axed decades ago by Sega. Its comeback, albeit in a form of a movie, will be welcomed by fans of the long-forgotten game.

What to Know About the Game

While plot details have yet to be confirmed, it can be easily assumed that will follow the story of the game that it is based on. Released in 1993, Eternal Champions is a fighting game that was playable on the Sega Genesis. Many believe it was released to compete with other fighting games of that time, such as Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.

The story of the game revolves around a character known as the Eternal Champion. This god-like character's goal is to restore balance in the world. To somehow accomplish this, a tournament is held, which features characters from different periods of history.

An enhanced version of the game, called Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side, was eventually released for the Sega CD.
