Before his weekend appearance on SNL Bernie Sanders had another juicy comedic role in 1999’s My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception.
A comedy about the conflict and laughs that arise during an Italian-Jewish wedding, My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception looks like the prequel My Big Fat Greek Wedding was lucky to avoid. Sanders himself plays a rabbi in a remarkably Larry David-like performance.
You can watch Sanders ramble about the Dodgers, Brooklyn, and baseball in this clip from My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception:
Despite featuring appearances from Bernie Sanders, Phish and Dom DeLuise, My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception looks like quite the slog. Its director, Martin Guigui, went on to make more low-budget comedies like National Lampoon’s Cattle Call and Benny Bliss and the Disciples of Greatness, plus a straight-to-video horror movie starring Dennis Quaid.
During the period in which Sanders was appearing in My X-Girlfriend’s Wedding Reception he was a U.S. Representative from Vermont and eight years from becoming Senator.
