Publisher and developer Resting Relic officially announced Song of Iron II, the sequel to their sleeper hit 2.5D side-scroller Viking action game, coming to Xbox Series, Xbox One, and PC via Steam sometime in 2023. The first game, Song of Iron, was first released in September 2021 on the same platforms and was a moderate success, thanks to its visceral action and unexpected mystery twist that presents itself somewhere along the story. Song of Iron II is conceived as a direct follow-up to the original, showing off the effects of the game’s ending. Check out the official announcement trailer for Song of Iron II below.
The announcement trailer for Song of Iron II does not shy away from the mystery twist introduced in the original, and instead chooses to embrace and build upon it. While this is a shame for those who have not yet played Song of Iron , it’s overall a good representation of what players can expect from the sequel, which now shows off the series antagonists.
Following the events of Song of Iron, an imperium from the sky has presented itself as false gods to your warrior people, reducing them to warrior slaves. Tasked with reuniting the clans and the remaining stragglers by a mysterious voice presenting itself as the All-Father, the player character must now embark on a journey to convince the deceived warriors of the truth of the imperium via war. Both Song of Iron and Song of Iron II are developed by solo developer Joe Winter.
As you can already expect, Song of Iron and Song of Iron II feature a what-if scenario of Viking warriors being invaded and enslaved by a technologically advanced race from the sky, wielding starships, laser blasters, and other powerful weaponry. As a warrior in this Viking clan, it’s up to you to liberate your people from the falsehoods presented by this imperium using not only your trusty arms but also the enemies’ arsenal against themselves. The game pits you against four different warrior clans, those remaining free from the imperium’s grasp, to produce a force to get them on your side rather than the invader’s.
