Sony is starting to slow down PlayStation download speeds in Europe, the United States, and other places. Sony took this action due to the fact that internet service providers are unable to deliver all the data from the internet to everyone.
In Sony’s blog post they stated that “Playing videogames enables players all over the world to connect with friends and family and enjoy much needed entertainment during these uncertain times. Sony Interactive Entertainment is working with internet service providers in Europe to manage download traffic to help preserve access for the entire internet community.”
Sony also confirmed that this change won’t affect online multiplayer speeds, which will continue to be smooth. Multiple other companies such as Netflix, YouTube, and others have started to reduce the quality of videos by decreasing the bandwidth. This is just to reduce the overall strain on the internet so that we all can use the service throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We believe it is important to do our part to address internet stability concerns as an unprecedented number of people are practicing social distancing and are becoming more reliant on internet access," Sony stated. "Players may experience somewhat slower or delayed game downloads but will still enjoy robust gameplay. We appreciate the support and understanding from our community, and they're doing their part, as we take these measures in an effort to preserve access for everyone.”
We don’t know what the download speeds will be limited to, but the speed limitation will last at least a month until the pandemic is over.
