It’s been an interesting week for Star Wars: Battlefront 2 rumors. Early in the week, Screenrant dug through the social media rumor mill and reported on two insiders, Cinelinx Jordan Maison and Furious Fanboys’ Jeremy Conrad, discussing the high probability of a Star Wars Battlefront 2 trailer reveal taking place during the gaming portion of Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Fla. It would likely accompany a detailed presentation walking fans through the new Star Wars game, slated for release this holiday season.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 will have a release date a few weeks ahead of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, so the big question for fans pertains to the story portions of Star Wars: Battlefront 2 . By all accounts, 2015’s Star Wars: Battlefront felt like a shallow, rushed game meant to reintroduce the franchise and familiarize players with EA’s vision for the multiplayer-only game. There were no story spoilers for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, as there wasn’t much story in the game at all, despite Disney and EA having the go-ahead to produce canonical story elements for their games. Instead, EA played it safe and got out an average shooter with a Star Wars skin that is serviceable for casual play, but didn’t really have the epic meat fans really want to see.
That should change with Star Wars: Battlefront 2. EA has confirmed it will have a single player story mode with a full-length campaign that spans “multiple eras,” CEO Andrew Wilson said in January during an investor’s conference call. He said there would be new characters introduced to players as well, a sign that the permission to create canonical elements is being used for Star Wars: Battlefront 2 . Hopefully this means characters that have a future in the Star Wars EU, not just minor throwback characters in stories that have already resolved. And a trailer reveal coupled with a full-on presentation at Star Wars Celebration is the perfect way for EA and Disney to get fans on board.
Of course, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 will certainly have a multiplayer feature as well. EA confirmed this week that the game will be playable during its EA Play event at E3 this year. It offers the perfect setting to unveil the multiplayer side of the game with thousands of eager fans already in attendance.
