It’s been three long years, but the Star Wars-themed MMORPG The Old Republic is finally getting a new expansion. Called ‘Onslaught’, the expansion is expected to deliver all kinds of new content and storylines, putting players in the middle of a new war that has sparked between the Galactic Republic and the Sith.
When it comes out sometime in September 2019, Onslaught will mark The Old Republic’s seventh expansion to date. The last expansion, Knights of The Eternal Throne, came out all the way back in 2016, so players have been yearning for new content for a while now. Fortunately, it seems that Onslaught will have plenty to offer both current and new players. Details are thin at the moment, but so far we know enough about Onslaught to reignite our interest in the The Old Republic.
According to the official announcement, the Onslaught expansion introduces a new conflict between two of the game’s factions, namely the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire. It also comes with two new planets: Onderon, ‘a planet of untamed jungles and savage beasts’, and Mek-Sha, ‘an independent fueling station and boomtown built in the hollows of a mined-out asteroid once controlled by the Hutts.’ Onslaught will also have players returning to existing planets, with a new Flashpoint on Corellia and a new Operation (The Old Republic’s version of multiplayer raids) on Drux, Onderon’s largest moon.
Based on the developers’ notes, the underlying theme behind the new Onslaught expansion is ‘play your way.’ Through new rewards and a brand new “Tactical” item slot, players are encouraged more than ever to customize their playstyles while still receiving the best rewards for the paths they choose to take. Whether you’re into PvE, PvP, Galactic Command, or Crafting, Onslaught’s newest item sets can be earned by players without having to deviate from the way they want to play.
Since its original launch in 2011, Star Wars The Old Republic has had plenty of content drops over the years, including some massive to moderately-sized expansions and releases. However, it’s been three years since the last expansion came out, so the game is definitely due for another. With many players having cleared all of the game’s content thus far, news of a new expansion has been well-received so far.
Onslaught is expected to go live sometime in September, and until then we’re keeping both ears open for any news or updates regarding the upcoming expansion. What do you think about Onslaught so far? Will you be siding with the Galactic Republic or join the Sith Empire in taking up arms against them? What gameplay improvements do you hope to see in the upcoming update?
